Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Housing Protections
Your rights to safe, stable housing if you are experiencing domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking. Available to all WHEDA applicants, residents, and HCV participants.
What Is VAWA?
The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) is a federal law that provides housing protections for individuals who have experienced domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking.
VAWA protections apply regardless of sex, gender identity, or sexual orientation and are enforced by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Your Rights Under VAWA
No Denial of Assistance
You cannot be denied housing or rental assistance because you are a victim of violence.
No Eviction for Abuse
You cannot be evicted solely because of acts of violence committed against you.
Protection for Everyone
VAWA protections apply to all individuals, not only women.
VAWA Certification & Documentation
If you request VAWA protections, your housing provider may ask you to submit documentation confirming the incident. This may include a HUD-approved VAWA Certification Form or other allowable documentation.
Emergency Transfers for Safety
If you are in danger, VAWA may allow you to request an emergency transfer to another unit or location to protect your safety.
